New era for race equality

Public authorities have a new statutory duty to promote race equality, and the changes that have been made under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 (RR(A)A) (See Race Relations (Amendment) Act: An EOR guide  and 100), are regarded by many as creating a new landmark in the battle against race discrimination in the UK.

In his response to the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry report (EOR 84), the Home Secretary promised to strengthen race legislation.
