Partnership in practice at Legal & General

Summary

With an increasing number of organisations now committed to developing a joint approach between management and unions, this article looks at the partnership agreement signed in April 1997 between Legal & General, one of Britain's largest financial services companies, and the MSF union. In particular, we examine:

  • the background to its introduction;

  • the broad objectives, principles and practices on which the partnership agreement is based;

  • the representative bodies and partnership mechanisms set up by the company to facilitate this joint approach; and

  • the likely impact on workplace relations.
