Asda is one of the UK's leading retailers, employing more than 85,000 people (over 45,000 full-time equivalent posts) in 220 stores, and marketing itself as operating Britain's "best value food and clothing superstores". In 1997, Asda had a turnover of more than £6.9 billion and an operating profit of almost £372 million.
