University of Westminster: assessing equality
The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, which came into force in May 2002, requires public bodies covered by the legislation to carry out race equality impact assessments (Race equality: an ongoing obligation). These are designed to assess whether or not the policies, procedures and practices of the organisation discriminate against ethnic minority groups. The University of Westminster decided to widen the scope of its impact assessment process by including other areas as well as race.
