Acas reissues annual report
There
has been only a slight decrease in the number of employment tribunal
claims in 2006/07, with 105,177 cases compared to 109,712 in
2005/06, according to Acas's reissued annual report, which shows amended
figures.
The report initially indicated a much greater decrease in tribunal claims,
stating that 84,039 claims had been received for conciliation. The additional
21,138 claims now included are equal pay claims, bringing the number of equal
pay claims brought in 2006/07 to 25,264.
Taking account of all jurisdictions (many people claim on more than one ground) there were 180,420 complaints last year, down from 191,885 in 2005/06.
The numbers fluctuate from year to year, with the figures sometimes inflated by multiple claims. For example, in 2004/05 there were 81,828 claims, but that in turn followed a sharp decline from 102,559 the year before.
The 105,177 claims for 2006/07 include:
11,495 under the Wages Act;
8,095 for sex discrimination;
5,399 for breach of contract;
3,780 in relation to working time;
3,654 for disability discrimination;
2,964 in relation to redundancy pay; and
2,383 for race discrimination.
The report also highlights that the first 394 claims for age discrimination were also brought during the period covered by this year's report.
