Government launches Red Tape Challenge
As part of its aim to reduce the overall burden of regulation, the Government has launched its Red Tape Challenge, inviting members of the public, businesses and organisations to "give a real boost to growth and personal freedoms by ripping up some of the 21,000 rules that are getting in their way".
The campaign will run from April 2011 until April 2013. The Government has published regulations covering six key areas - including employment law and equality - that affect all businesses, and comments are invited on these throughout the whole campaign via its website. The Government will then decide which regulations will stay, with a "default presumption" that burdensome regulations will be scrapped.
In addition, the Government will publish and invite comments on regulations that affect specific sectors and industries every few weeks. After comments have closed on regulations for a sector/industry, the Government will have three months to decide which regulations will stay.
