How to ensure successful induction
Induction is more likely to be effective if it is integrated into an organisation's general people management activities, according to IRS research.
The integration of induction into other organisational activities, such as training or performance management, means that it is increasingly been seen as a process rather than a self-contained or short-term event. Only one in five of the organisations surveyed consider induction to be no more than a short training programme, while 44% prefer a two-stage approach - a short, intensive training programme followed by a longer, more flexible learning process.
According to the organisations surveyed, other factors that make induction more likely to be considered successful are: tailored learning, support for line managers delivering induction, evaluation of induction and the induction arrangements having been updated within the past two years.
This research was carried out in February and March 2006 among 134 organisations, all of which provide induction for new recruits.
