Public sector awards reflect Brown's calls for restraint
The Chancellor's calls for discipline have lead to inflation-based awards for public sector employees covered by pay review bodies, including teachers, the armed forces, the judiciary and senior public servants.
The awards range from 2.25% for senior positions in the civil service and the military to 3.2% for members of the armed forces.
Urging pay restraint in both the private and public sectors, Gordon Brown said: "It is by holding fast to our economic disciplines that Britain, despite the worldwide slowdown, has managed to combine low inflation with high levels of employment."
The Government asked the pay review bodies to recommend pay rises to support modernisation by encouraging recruitment and retention without "diverting resources from crucial services areas".
