Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 comes into force
Implementation date: 24 October 2000
The Regulations make it unlawful for an
employer (or someone else with its express or implied consent) to intercept a
communication in the course of its transmission by means of a private
telecommunication system. It is lawful to do this where both the maker or
sender and the intended recipient of the communication have consented to its
interception, or the interceptor has "reasonable grounds" for
believing that they have so consented or the interception is authorised by the
Telecommunications (Lawful Business Practice) (Interception of Communications)
Regulations 2000. The Act can be viewed on the OPSI website.
