Editor's message: Recognising and responding to the needs of employees with caring responsibilities can bring benefits for both employees and employers. By offering support and flexibility, you can help employees to stay healthy and engaged at work, reducing absence and employee turnover.

From 6 April 2024, employees with caring responsibilities are entitled to the new statutory right to carer's leave.

Carers are entitled to one week of unpaid leave every 12 months, to provide or arrange care for a dependant with a long-term care need.

We have published a new carer's policy, which reflects how the new right will operate, alongside a suite of template letters and forms and a new line manager training guide to help make sure managers are ready to deal with requests.
