A step in the right direction

Summary

In the third part of our special issue on conciliation, mediation and arbitration, we focus on the forthcoming ACAS scheme offering individual arbitration - instead of an employment tribunal hearing - to resolve disputes relating to complaints of unfair dismissal.

Due to be in place by spring 2001, the new scheme has been welcomed by the Confederation of British Industry, which has called on the employment tribunal service to do more to discourage tribunal hearings with little chance of success and to encourage more people to explore other methods of finding a resolution.
