Councils ignore equal pay deadline following advice that it is not contractually binding

Fewer than half of local authorities were due to meet the deadline of 31 March to fully implement equal pay reviews of their workforce, according to Local Government Employers (LGE).

The 31 March 2007 deadline for local government employers to implement pay and grading structures that would deliver equal pay for women formed part of the three-year pay deal agreed between local government employers and trade unions in 2004 (Councils agree deal on equal pay and diversity).
