Don't nurse a grievance: resolving disputes at work

Key points

  • Harassment and/or bullying are at the top of the list of complaints most commonly raised by employees in workplaces covered by our current research.

  • Unresolved grievances have culminated in an employment tribunal claim within the past three years in over a third of organisations in our survey.

  • Around half of our 75 survey respondents have a single formal written procedure covering both individual and collective disputes initiated by employees, while around a third operate an individual procedure only, and just one in six has separate procedures.

  • Around six in 10 employers are planning changes to their policies in this area, partly as a result of the new provisions on dispute resolution in the Employment Act 2002.

  • SURVEY DETAILS

The IRS Employment Review survey of procedures for resolving disputes or grievances was carried out during July 2002, around the time that the Employment Act 2002 received Royal Assent.
