Due recognition

Summary

In its 1997 general election manifesto, Labour pledged that: "People should be free to join or not to join a union. Where they decide to join, and where a majority of the relevant workforce vote in a ballot for the union to represent them, the union should be recognised." In June 2000 that promise became reality, when the statutory recognition provisions of the Employment Relations Act 1999 came into force.
