EU: Unemployment mounts across Europe

The European Commission's spring 2009 Quarterly EU Labour Market Review, published in April, finds that the overall EU employment level has been shrinking since mid-2008, while unemployment has been increasing steadily, with three million more people now out of work compared with this time last year.

According to the report (PDF format, 330K) (on the Europa website), the EU economy is now clearly in recession, with gross domestic product (GDP) declining by 1.5% in the last quarter of 2008, following small falls in the previous two quarters.
