Firm hold on retail purse strings

Retailers are maintaining a tight rein on pay levels in a sector characterised by intense competitive pressures and a squeeze on margins.

Basic pay settlements in the retail sector were lower than those in the rest of the economy in the period between 1 September 2002 and 30 April 2003, according to data collected by IRS.
