Data issued by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show a sharp rise in industrial action in Ireland in the third quarter of 2009, which is likely to have intensified in the last three months of the year.

The CSO figures, published on 10 December, indicate that 66,887 working days were lost due to industrial disputes in the third quarter of 2009, compared with 578 days in the same period of 2008.
