Italy: Unemployment and 'irregular' employment declining
According to figures released recently by the Istat national statistical institute, in 2006 the Italian labour market recorded its best performance since 1993.
The unemployment rate fell from 7.7% in 2005 to 6.8% in 2006, while the employment rate rose to 58.4% of the working-age population, from 57.5% in 2005, with the employment rate for women recording a slightly steeper increase (of 1 percentage point).
