Legislation comes of age

With age discrimination in employment and vocational training set to be outlawed in 2006, our survey of 83 employing organisations assesses the current state of play on age diversity.

Key points

  • Around four in 10 employers do not currently have any formal or informal policy in place on age diversity or age discrimination.

  • Typically, organisations do not formally set either minimum or maximum ages when recruiting new employees - it is more likely that implicit assumptions about older workers are influential in terms of discrimination in recruitment and promotion.
