Obesity: a workplace health issue for the 21st century
Workplace weight-loss programmes are a good way of tackling what could turn out to be the UK's biggest employee health challenge of the new century - obesity.
Obesity is set to become one of the biggest employee health issue of the new century - 21% of men and 24% of women are already classified as clinically obese and obesity is responsible for more than 9,000 premature deaths a year in England.
Work can contribute to the development of obesity, particularly if it is poorly designed, boring or provides opportunities for the over-consumption of food.
However, the employment setting also provides a unique medium for getting health promotion messages across, particularly to groups of people such as young and middle-aged men who are least likely to come into contact with other health educators.
Workplace weight-reduction programmes are effective and are well-received by employees, both separately and as part of heart disease reduction initiatives. |
