Sharpening up recruitment and selection with competencies

Easier and better hiring decisions, and an enhanced role for line managers in the recruitment process, could be outcomes of introducing competency-based selection.

Learning points

  • Increasing numbers of employers are introducing competency-based recruitment and selection practices.

  • Reported benefits include: the ability to assess candidates' softer, behavioural competencies alongside their technical skills; selection practices that are seen as more realistic and acceptable by line managers and candidates; and improved hiring decisions.

  • However, developing and applying competencies requires considerable levels of resources, time and expertise, and the involvement of end-users.
