Testing times for selectors

Fear of recruiting unsuitable candidates has prompted many employers to turn to psychometric testing to improve their selection practices.

Learning points

  • More and more employers have introduced testing in the selection process as evidence mounts that, if used properly, tests can minimise the risks of making a poor recruitment decision.

  • Tests can also help recruiters identify those candidates best able to adapt to the needs of a rapidly changing business environment, while computer-based systems are making testing more cost-effective.

  • Few organisations make selection decisions based solely on the results of tests, although they can carry more weight when there is little to choose between candidates.
