Why join a union? Go figure

White-collar professionals are now more likely to join a union than those who may be most in need, but what can the unions do about it?

Trade union membership may have peaked as former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher came to power at the tail-end of the 1970s, but it is necessary to look back half a century to find the "traditional" trade unionism of heavy industry and skilled manual labour in its splendour.

In 1954, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) had more than 684,000 members, second only to the giant Transport and General Workers Union (T&G).
