5% pay award for film and television freelancers

Key details

Pay award: 5%

Employees covered (nos): freelance staff (20,000)

Effective date: 1 November 2003

A union-recommended settlement covering an estimated 20,000 freelancers working in the film and television industry has resulted in a 5% basic pay rise. The deal, negotiated between the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (PACT) and the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematographic and Theatre Union (BECTU), also includes:

  • additional help for lower-graded staff by, for the first time, setting rates for trainees, call persons and runners;

  • an employer contribution to freelancers' pensions;

  • improved accident and medical insurance cover when working abroad; and

  • clearer procedures for contract paperwork.
