Austria: Election result

In the general election on 1 October 2006, the ruling Austrian People's party (Österreichische Volkspartei, ÖVP), under the leadership of Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, suffered an unexpected defeat. It seems likely that the next government will be a conservative-social democrat coalition, under Alfred Gusenbauer, the leader of the Social Democratic party (Sozialdemokratische Partei Österreichs, SPÖ).
