Court fines scrap merchant £220k

Peter Jones, 69, a fitter employed by Mayer Parry (Recycling) Ltd, was killed in August 1999 at the company's site in Willesden, London, during the annual overhaul of a fragmentiser, a large machine used to break scrap metal into small pieces.

Jones was replacing the sacrificial plates lining the drum of the machine, an operation that involved the use of a crane to lift 130kg steel plates into position.
