EU: Commission consults on trainee doctors' hours

In March 2009, the European Commission consulted national Governments and the EU-level social partners over plans by Hungary, the Netherlands and the UK to postpone imposing a 48-hour limit on trainee doctors' weekly working time from August 2009 to August 2011.

The EU Working Time Directive (2003/88/EC) provides that average working time in any seven-day period, including overtime, must not exceed 48 hours, which may be calculated over a reference period not exceeding four months (or longer, by agreement).
