EU Commission: Directive proposed to implement maritime labour agreement

In July 2008, the European Commission proposed a Directive to implement a recent agreement on incorporating the 2006 International Labour Organisation (ILO) maritime labour convention into EU law, signed by the European-level social partner organisations in the maritime shipping industry.

In May 2008, at the behest of the European Commission, the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) and the European Community Shipowners’ Association (ECSA) signed an agreement on the implementation across the EU of the maritime labour convention.
