EU: Commission launches campaign to narrow gender pay gap
With the latest figures indicating that women still earn, on average, 17.4% less than men across the EU, the European Commission launched a campaign in March 2009 to help reduce the gap.
It has been 52 years since the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community (the Treaty of Rome) was signed, enshrining the principle of equal pay for equal work for male and female workers, and 34 years since the adoption of Directive (75/117/EEC) on the application of the equal pay principle.
