EU: Social security rules take effect

New rules on the coordination of member states' social security schemes came into force on 1 May 2010, aimed at making it easier for people to move to other EU countries to work.

The role of the EU in social security is to coordinate national schemes (which remain the sole responsibility of national authorities) so that people can enjoy uninterrupted cover if they move to another member state.
