European-level trade unions agree to merge

Three trade union organisations with members in manufacturing industry across Europe have decided to merge in 2012, creating a single federation with eight million members in industries including chemicals, metalworking and textiles.

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) has 12 affiliated "European trade union federations", which bring together unions operating in particular sectors across Europe, such as public services, transport, construction and education.
