"Firm but fair" pay deals for public sector workers
As the Chancellor of the Exchequer calls for discipline in pay settlements, the government hails inflation-rate rises for teachers, the armed forces and civil servants as "firm but fair".

Teachers in England and Wales (2.9%), members of the armed forces (3.2%), the judiciary (2.75%) and senior civil servants and the senior military (2.25%) are all set for inflation-rate rises effective 1 April 2003.
This year's awards are aimed at supporting the modernisation of public services while maintaining spending discipline.

Around 650,000 teachers, armed forces personnel and civil servants are to receive pay increases around the rate of inflation from 1 April 2003, as the Chancellor of the Exchequer insisted that higher settlements would not be allowed in the current economic climate.
