Germany: Coalition reaches deal on extending unemployment benefit

In November 2007, the conservative-social democrat coalition government reached an agreement on extending the duration of unemployment benefit for older workers, and on cutting unemployment-related social security contributions.

The agreement, reached on 14 November, will see an extension of older workers’ period of entitlement to unemployment benefit (known as “Unemployment Benefit I”, or ALG I).
