Germany: Strikes over 'social plans' declared legal

In a ruling likely to prompt controversy, the Federal Labour Court (Bundesarbeitsgericht) has determined that a union-organised strike over the terms of a "social compensation plan" (Sozialplan) can be lawful.

Social compensation plans are agreements between companies and works councils to mitigate the disadvantages to employees of major alterations in company operations.
