Information Commissioner urges policy review on email and telephone use

Employers are being encouraged to establish an over-arching policy on the use of electronic communications if they intend to monitor workers' use of email, voicemail, internet or the telephone.

The Information Commissioner's code on monitoring at work1, published on 11 June, also urges employers to review existing policies, ensure that policies and practices are in line with each other, and check that workers are aware of the policy.
