Poland: Record numbers retired in 2008
In 2008, some 250,000 Polish workers retired, the highest figure ever recorded, raising concerns about the financial sustainability of the pensions system.
An average of around 100,000 people took retirement each year until recently, according to data from the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS). In 2007, this figure rose sharply to 217,000 and there was a further 15% increase to 250,000 in 2008 (out of a total population of some 38 million).
