Portugal: Union confederation calls general strike

Portugal’s largest trade union confederation, the CGTP, has called a one-day general strike for 30 May 2007 in protest at the government’s economic and social policies.

The Socialist party government led by prime minister José Sócrates, which has been in office since 2005, is pursuing a policy of reform and modernisation.
