Smurfit fined £100,000 over death of a paper worker

Smurfit UK Ltd has been fined £100,000 for the death of an employee resulting from what the sentencing judge described as "a very serious breach of duty indeed".

The accident happened on 26 January 2000 at the company's Burnley Paper and Board Mill in Lancashire, as Ian Holgate, a 29-year-old paper maker, was attempting to clean a paper machine.
