Supermarket chain Tesco has increased basic pay rates for store employees and section managers by 3%, effective from 4 July 2004. The rise, agreed with retail union Usdaw, takes the basic rate for a provincial employee with a year's service on grade C (which includes checkout operators) from £5.49 to £5.66 an hour.
