Tesco retail staff helped by 3.05% rise

The country's largest private sector employer, supermarket chain Tesco, has increased basic pay rates for store employees and section managers by 3.05%, effective from 2 July 2006. The pay increase, agreed with retail union Usdaw, takes the basic rate for a provincial employee with a year's service on grade C (which includes checkout operators) from £5.83 to £6.02 an hour.

Other changes as a result of this year's settlement include:

  • an increase in the first-aid allowance from £3.60 to £3.70 a week; and

  • an uplift of 3.05% to night premia in line with the core pay increase.
