Consider if suitable alternative employment is available for a redundant employee
Key points
When carrying out a redundancy procedure, the employer should determine if there are any vacancies that would be suitable for a redundant employee.
If the employer makes an employee redundant without considering the question of alternative employment, it will be at risk of a finding of unfair dismissal.
If the employee unreasonably refuses an offer of suitable alternative employment, the employee will be ineligible for a redundancy payment, as long as the employer met certain conditions when making the offer.
