Employers' health and safety obligations apply to homeworkers in the same way as they do to employees who work on the organisation's premises. An employer's duty to carry out risk assessments therefore extends to staff who work at home.
The risk assessment should include the identification of the hazards that are present in the area where the homeworker is working, assessment of the extent of the risks, and decisions on how to manage the risks to comply with health and safety law.
The homeworker can carry out the risk assessment, but will need to be trained on how to do this.
