Should an employer delay notifying employees of potential redundancies if one or more of the affected employees are on short-term sick leave?
There is no requirement that all affected employees are notified of a potential redundancy situation at exactly the same time. Depending on the number of employees involved, it may cause significant delay to the process if the employer waits until all affected employees are able to attend a group meeting.
Where practicable, the employer should hold an informal meeting, in person and/or online, with all employees who are able to attend to announce the potential redundancy situation. The employer should confirm the announcement in writing, as soon as possible after the meeting, to all employees who are at risk of redundancy, including those who were absent from the meeting.
