Introduction
Appraisal is an exercise involving an appraiser and appraisee of looking backwards to evaluate past job performance, and looking forward with a view to drive high future performance.
An effective appraisal scheme is an opportunity to maximise employee performance for the mutual benefit of the employee and the organisation, and is also a chance to acknowledge the employee's successes and thank them for their contribution.
This training guide aims to help you as line manager set yourself up for success when conducting end of year appraisals/performance reviews with your team members and covers:
- making the appraisals process meaningful;
- setting objectives that take account of "what" and "how" objectives should be achieved;
- preparing for and conducting an appraisal meeting; and
- assessing performance objectively and consistently.
