Conducting a disciplinary meeting - line manager training

Original author: Lynda Macdonald

Brightmine editor: Laura Kimpton

Introduction

This training covers how to (following an investigation) conduct formal disciplinary meetings in a fair and reasonable way, including:

  • conducting disciplinary hearings remotely;
  • dealing with tricky scenarios such as where an employee fails to attend a disciplinary meeting;
  • disciplinary sanctions, including warnings; and
  • employees' right of appeal.

This training is part of a series of guides on employee discipline and is accompanied by Misconduct and Conducting a disciplinary investigation.

The guide reflects the "Acas code of practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures", which provides practical guidance on fair disciplinary handling. An employment tribunal will take the code into account if an employee brings an unfair dismissal claim following dismissal for misconduct, including whether any award of compensation should be increased for a breach of the code.
