Public sector equality duty

Fiona Cuming

Editor's message: Public-sector organisations and other bodies exercising public functions are subject to the public sector equality duty. The aim of the duty is to ensure that those exercising public functions actively pursue equality objectives.

The public sector equality duty is a key feature of the Equality Act 2010. The duty has two elements: a general equality duty and specific equality duties.

The general equality duty requires public authorities to have due regard to achieving three aims when they are exercising their functions. The specific equality duties support the functioning of the general equality duty.
